Indulging at the best cafes from Horning to Coltishall
Bizarrely, the Norfolk Broads has a lot of mediocre cafés which serve up expensive tea and dry cake in cramped surroundings. The Galley at Horning bucks the trend with delicious locally sourced food and a highly sophisticated setting. Park in the public car-park, stroll down the high street and you’ll find it on the left-hand side.
The Galley is part café, part deli and part art gallery. There is a great range of teas and coffees and, as always required in a truly amazing café, gorgeous homemade cakes. They also do a fine sausages roll and pork pie. Be warned – you will not be able to leave without buying something, even if you have already consumed your bodyweight in cake.
They don’t have a lot of seating so you might have to wait for a table but in warmer weather there is lots of room on the grass overlooking the Broad. They welcome kids but the art gallery setting means that it isn’t the ideal place to take a troublesome toddler.
If you are over in the Broads direction, you also might like to try A Piece of Cake in Coltishall. Run by two lovely ladies from the village, it serves up the most amazing (and huge!) pieces of homemade cake. In my opinion, the chocolate cake is the most delicious, although the lemon and sultana takes second place.
